Catalyst Maria High School scholar Christopher A. (Class of 2019) spent this summer working with UChicago and UIC on laboratory research on prostate cancer. The focus of this research was centered on the disparities between African-American and European-American males and prostrate cancer based on vitamin D deficiency. Christopher (pictured below) worked very hard this summer and presented gave a formal presentation on the research this week- we are so proud of him!
Top Chef Junior finalist Rahanna Bisseret Martinez and Anne Trotter (pictured below), sister of the late, world-famous chef Charlie Trotter visited Catalyst Maria’s on-campus partner Maria Kaupas Center (MKC) this morning! Twenty-five scholars in grades 8-11 were selected to participate in the 2018 Culinary Summer Camp, sponsored by The Trotter Project. The camp will be held at the MKC July 9-13, 2018, during which participating scholars will learn the basics of culinary arts and hospitality from a professional chef! Many thanks to The Trotter Project for their support of the MKC, Catalyst, and the Chicago Lawn community!
Catalyst Maria held an exceptional STEAM EXPO 2018 on May 31, 2018! The second annual STEAM EXPO featured K-12 scholars exhibiting, performing, and demonstrating their accomplishments in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM). The event also hosted a community resource fair and was incredibly well attended despite very warm temperatures! A HUGE shout out to all Catalyst Maria team members that made this such an inspiring event, with a special thank you to Mr. Sean Hamilton for his remarkable leadership and commitment of time and energy to make this event so incredible!
