STEM programming continues to thrive at Catalyst! The images below illustrate Catalyst Maria junior scholars in their Project Lead The Way class working to become structural/civil engineers by building bridges on software, and then using wooden sticks to create their models. AMAZING work by PLTW teacher Mr. Ikramullah and his scholars!
January wrapped up with a celebratory and informative “Peace Party” at Howland. Our Restorative Justice Committee and respective student committee, C.A.L.M. (Culture Agent Liaison Members) and organized and facilitated a “Peace Party” for the 5th through 8th grades. During their lunch periods, the collective group of peace ambassadors distributed restorative practices bookmarks (encompassing 5 key restorative questions), peace sign pins, and yummy treats. They likewise engaged in conversations with their peers about the importance of having ‘restorative chats’ with school staff, friends and family members. The RJ Committee and C.A.L.M. crews were thrilled out the plethora of scholars excited to learn about restorative practices and desiring to play a key part in making positive change in their community. Check out a picture from the event below!
Additionally, some of Howland’s incredible young ladies (1st through 4th grades) attended ‘Fancy Nancy The Musical’ at the Apollo Theater. Characters from “The Mermaid Ballet” were cleverly featured in this charming musical, which centralized on social skills, manners and etiquette, and untangling feelings that all children experience. The Catalyst Howland scholars and staff loved singing along with the cast and enjoyed many laughs throughout the wonderful performance!

This initiative provides a glimpse of the African American experience through stories often unheard. Black is Human takes an honest look at our community, celebrates its spirit and illuminates a truer picture. Scholars were featured in different videos, one of which can be accessed below:
